». For those who do not read French: « The hymn Iste Confessor (of a Confessor Bishop) is the proper hymn for St Martin (11 Nov). Through the 3rd paragraph it celebrates the miracles accomplished near his tomb, which was one of the most famous places of pilgrimage during Middle Age. »

There is something curious about this proper: although it is defined as a mode 4, the verse seems to be on mode 1 as it finishes on D, similar ending to the Grad. Dulcis (Sacred Heart of Jesus). Even though a gradual is not a processionary proper it is allowed to repeat the antiphon after the verse; this way it will end on E.

- Notice the position of the C clef at the verse: second line from the top when the initial key was C clef on the first line from the top.
- High notes top C and D for an exclamation of joy and adoration when singing a Domino Deo excelso: the Virgin Mary is blessed "by the Lord the most high God".
- Rejoice on the word Jerusalem culminating at top F in the verse, echoed by the word laetitia (=joy) on the same top F. Compare the heights of the celestial Jerusalem in Heaven: top F, to the bottom D marking the journey of the people of God, Israel, here on this earth.
- Watch out the various B natural and B flat in the last phrase tu honorificentia populi nostri, can be tricky.
- On the last word nostri: no lengthening at the first clivis of "stri" even if it tempting to do so.

- Lovely Alleluia with its ascending and descending patterns: sing legato.
- Pay attention to the word originalis: it is difficult to sing with its many thirds, up and down.
- Watch out: old editions of the Liber Usualis (even the 1956 one) have a mistake on the first note E of "lis" on the word originalis: they do not have the dot, when there actually is a dot. You can see it has been added manually on the latest 1961 version: the mark is bigger.

bonus:
Melody similar to All. Justus ut palma from the Mass of Abbots, All. Dilexit Andream from the Mass of St Andrew and All. O quam bonus from Ember Friday at Pentecost.
And yes it is a difficult Alleluia; see below for a simpler version.

- The word autem is a long melism. There are a few jumps CEG and descending FED, easy to sing. From -er autem to the end, you repeat twice a pattern starting on CEG with a Bb at the top and later a FED, then twice a lovely pattern of 8 notes GEFGEFDE ending on a doubled E to make both distinctive from the rest.
- Finally senem regebat is just the repetition of the Alleluia melody.
All. Senex puerum
