PART VI -
STRUCTURE
OF THE OFFICE
« continued » |
The section of Vespers which begins with Ave, Maris Stella, with its prayers and with the Indulgete, was a later addition to Vespers, as was the Commemoration of St. Bridget toward the end of Vespers.. The Vesper hymns of Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Friday, each with 5 verses, were composed by Bridget's Confessor, Master Peter (in fact, he composed several of the hymns used in the Bridgettine Office). For the other days of the week, he took existing hymns in use at the time.
These thumbnails show the start of Sunday Vespers in the 1908 Breviary.
