PART V -
STRUCTURE
OF THE OFFICE
« continued » |
Although
Bridget was familiar with the Officium Parvum (the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin) in perhaps more than one form (some biographers note that she had taught her husband to pray the Little Office), this Bridgettine Office which she, through her revelations, prepared for her Nuns was quite different, not only in content, but in concept, as well. {For example, the Little Offices of the time, considering the various usages in existence, were almost completely invariable in structure, context and originality.) See the Psalter Schema for psalm-use variations.

Hymn (varies daily)
Amen.

CEREMONY AT THE
SEPULCHRUM
(Bridget's Rule, and the later "Additiones," instructed that after Terce each day, the Nuns should gather at an open casket filled with earth. In Syon Abbey, this ceremony took place in the Chapter House (Room). While she intones Psalm 129 (De Profundis), she moves the earth with her fingers. Then, there follows a closing prayer:
Amen. |
