Notes:

  • «Prelude» - This is another name for the  Invitatory with its antiphon

  • «Reading» - There is only ONE reading at this office.

  • This breviary was prepared as an "interim" breviary -- some of the future Liturgy of the Hours (1971/1972)features are included already, and the calendar is formulated according to the reformed post -Vatican II scheme.

  • This is truly a "short" breviary -- one of the finest in the 20th century.  Its principal drawback is mentioned in the introduction: this office only makes use of 111 psalms.

  • Legion of Mary prayers and an intense and long introduction for catechesis is printed at the start.

  • Psalms are from the Grail (as in our current English Liturgy of the Hours)

  • Hymns are classic office hymns

  • There are two Saturday offices:  the ordinary, weekly office, and the Saturday Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary.  (The psalms are the same for both offices;  Readings, certain antiphons and prayers are proper).

  • There is a "festal psalter" - used primarily for Solemnities and other important feasts.  Additional proper texts are taken from the Commons section as well as from the Sunday psalter.

  • At Vespers on alternate Sundays, pss 112 & 113 replace any two of the first (109, 110, 111) psalms, and at Compline, ps 90 replaces pss 4 & 133 in the same way.
